Do You Actually Need an SEO Agency, or Just a Better Website?

We'll say something that isn't great for our own sales pitch: a meaningful chunk of the businesses that come to us asking about "ongoing SEO" don't actually need ongoing SEO yet. They need a website that isn't actively working against them first.

Here's the honest split we've seen play out over and over.

You probably just need a better website if: your site is slow, hasn't been touched in years, has broken pages or dead links, isn't mobile-friendly, or has thin/generic content that could describe any business in your industry. In these cases, a proper rebuild or serious overhaul often produces a bigger jump in visibility and leads than months of "SEO services" layered on top of a broken foundation. You can't optimize your way out of a site that's fundamentally slow or badly structured.

You probably need ongoing SEO work if: your website itself is solid — fast, mobile-friendly, well-structured — but you're in a genuinely competitive niche where rankings depend on sustained content, backlinks, and authority-building over months. If your competitors are actively publishing, actively building links, and actively refreshing content, and you're not, that's a real ongoing-effort problem that a one-time website fix won't solve alone.

The honest test: pull up your own site on your phone right now, on mobile data, not wifi. If it feels slow, cluttered, or dated to you — the person who already knows and likes the business — imagine how it reads to a stranger comparing you against three competitors in the same search results. That's usually your answer before any agency conversation even needs to happen.

We'd rather tell a potential client "you need a rebuild, not a retainer" than sell an SEO package on top of a website that was never going to convert the traffic anyway. It's a better outcome for them, and honestly, it's the kind of conversation that gets referrals later.
