AI Search Is Changing How Customers Find You — Is Your Site Ready?

Something has genuinely shifted in the last couple of years, and it's worth business owners actually understanding instead of dismissing as hype. A growing share of searches now get answered directly on the results page — AI-generated summaries, direct answers, comparison snippets — before a user ever clicks through to an actual website. For some types of questions, that means fewer clicks reach anyone's site at all, no matter how well it's optimized in the traditional sense.

The businesses that still get pulled into those AI-generated answers tend to share a few traits. Their content is structured clearly — real headings, direct answers near the top of the page, not three paragraphs of preamble before getting to the point. They use structured data (schema markup) that explicitly tells search engines what a page is about — a service, a price range, a business type, a review rating — rather than making the engine guess from unstructured text. And their information is consistent across their site and their other listings, which seems to matter for how confidently these systems surface a business as an answer.

What we'd actually recommend doing about this: make sure your key pages answer the obvious question directly near the top, rather than burying it under generic introduction text. Add basic schema markup for your business type, services, and reviews if it isn't there already — it's a relatively small technical task with outsized effect. And keep your core facts (hours, services, pricing range, location) consistent everywhere they appear online, because inconsistency seems to actively hurt visibility in these newer AI-driven results, not just traditional rankings.

What we would NOT recommend: panicking and rewriting your entire site around vague "AI SEO" promises from anyone selling a magic fix. Nobody outside Google fully knows the exact mechanics of these systems, and a lot of the "AI SEO" advice floating around right now is guesswork dressed up as expertise. Solid fundamentals — clear content, real structured data, consistent information — are the same advice that's helped for years. This is a real shift, but it rewards doing the fundamentals properly, not chasing a new trick every month.
