How Often Should You Actually Update Your WordPress Plugins?

Outdated plugins are the single most common way WordPress sites actually get hacked — not some sophisticated attack, just a known vulnerability in an old plugin version that a bot scans for and exploits automatically. And yet "update plugins" is one of the most neglected basic maintenance tasks we see, usually because a past update once broke something and nobody wants to risk it again.

A realistic cadence: security-critical plugins (anything touching forms, logins, e-commerce/payment) should be updated within days of a new release, not months. Everything else can reasonably be reviewed and updated every 2-4 weeks. Waiting six months between updates is where the real risk accumulates — by then there could be a dozen known, published vulnerabilities sitting unpatched on a live site.

The fear of an update breaking something is legitimate — it does happen, particularly with page builders and heavily customized themes. The fix isn't to avoid updating; it's to have a staging copy of the site (a private test version) where updates get applied and checked first, and a recent backup before updating the live site regardless. That way, a broken update costs you a rollback, not a broken live site in front of customers.

When an update does break something: don't panic and start deactivating plugins randomly. Check the plugin's changelog for what changed, check if there's a known conflict reported by other users (often visible in the plugin's support forum), and roll back to the previous version temporarily if needed while the fix gets sorted — most reputable plugins allow reverting to an older version.

The businesses that get hacked are disproportionately the ones that installed WordPress once, set it up, and never touched it again. Fifteen minutes every couple of weeks reviewing update notifications is a genuinely small time cost against the alternative — a hacked site, a Google security warning, and potentially weeks of cleanup and reputation damage.
