What Makes a Website Look "Expensive" (It's Rarely the Budget)

We've seen websites built on tiny budgets that look genuinely premium, and we've seen expensive builds that still feel cheap. The difference almost never comes down to how much was spent. It comes down to a handful of details that have nothing to do with budget and everything to do with restraint.
Whitespace. Cramming every inch of a page with text, buttons, and images is the single most common way a site ends up looking cheap. Expensive-feeling design almost always has room to breathe — generous margins, uncluttered sections, one clear focal point per screen instead of five competing for attention.
Typography consistency. Using three different fonts, mismatched heading sizes, and inconsistent spacing between text elements is a dead giveaway of an amateur build. Premium-feeling sites usually use one, maybe two font families total, with a clear, repeated hierarchy — the same heading size and weight used the same way, every time, throughout the site.
Photo quality over photo quantity. A handful of genuinely good, well-lit, real photos beat a gallery of mismatched, over-compressed stock images every time. And it's not really about avoiding stock photos entirely — the giveaway is generic, obviously-stock imagery: forced smiles, oddly staged handshakes, the same visuals showing up on hundreds of other unrelated sites. One or two authentic, well-shot real photos do more for perceived quality than ten generic stock shots.
Consistent color use. Premium sites tend to use a genuinely restrained color palette — two or three brand colors, used consistently for buttons and accents, rather than a different color scheme on every page.
If you want three free fixes right now: increase the padding/spacing around your main sections so things aren't crammed together, pick one heading font and use it everywhere instead of whatever came default with each page builder module, and replace your single worst stock photo with a real one — even a decent phone photo of your actual product, team, or space beats a stock photo that's clearly stock. None of this costs anything beyond time, and it's usually the fastest way to change how "expensive" a site feels.
