There was a period where "does the site have HTTPS" was treated as the finish line for website trust and security. It's still necessary — but it was never sufficient, and treating it as a complete security checklist gives a false sense of safety.
What HTTPS/SSL actually does: it encrypts the connection between a visitor's browser and your server, so data passed between them (form submissions, login details, payment info) can't be easily intercepted in transit. That's genuinely important, especially for anything involving forms or checkout.
What it does NOT do: it says nothing about whether your WordPress plugins are outdated, whether your admin password is weak, whether your database is properly backed up, or whether the business behind the site is legitimate. A phishing site can have a perfectly valid SSL certificate too — the padlock only confirms the connection is encrypted, not that the destination is trustworthy.
Other trust signals customers actually respond to, beyond the padlock: real contact information they can verify (an address, a landline, not just a contact form), genuine testimonials tied to real names, clear policies (returns, privacy, terms) that are actually specific rather than generic boilerplate, and consistency between your website and your other online presence — Google listing, social profiles, reviews.
In the UAE specifically, data privacy expectations are becoming more visible to customers, particularly around how personal data submitted through forms is stored and used. A clear, honestly-written privacy policy — not just a copy-pasted generic template — is increasingly something customers notice, especially for anything collecting health, financial, or personal information.
The padlock is table stakes now, not a differentiator. The businesses that actually earn trust are the ones layering real, verifiable signals on top of it — not the ones assuming HTTPS alone finishes the job.
