WordPress vs Custom-Built Websites: What's Actually Right for a Small Business

This question comes up in nearly every first conversation with a new client, and the honest answer is "it depends on what you actually need," not a universal winner.

WordPress makes sense when: you need to be able to edit your own content without calling a developer every time, your site is mostly informational/service-based with maybe a blog or simple booking form, your budget is limited, and you want access to a massive ecosystem of existing plugins for things like SEO, forms, or basic e-commerce. The vast majority of small business websites genuinely don't need anything more than this.

Custom-built makes sense when: you have a specific, complex functionality that doesn't fit well into existing plugins — a custom booking system with unusual rules, a highly specific internal dashboard, an application with real business logic, not just content pages. Custom builds are also worth it when performance at real scale matters more than ease of editing, since a hand-built site has far less overhead than a CMS carrying plugin code it doesn't need.

The tradeoffs people underestimate: WordPress needs maintenance — plugin and core updates, security monitoring, backups — it's not "set and forget." Skipping that maintenance is where most WordPress security problems come from, not some inherent flaw in WordPress itself. Custom builds, meanwhile, mean you're dependent on whoever built it (or a comparable developer) for any future content-level or structural change — there's no plugin ecosystem to fall back on, and no built-in dashboard for a non-technical person to edit things themselves.

The realistic signal that a business has outgrown WordPress: when the workarounds needed to force a specific feature into a page builder become genuinely more complicated and fragile than just building that one feature properly from scratch. Until you hit that point, WordPress (built and maintained properly) handles the overwhelming majority of small business needs perfectly well.
